Duties:

Reports to the Day Camp Supervisor, the Inclusion Camp Counsellor is specifically employed to work as a low ratio support with children and youth who require additional support.  They engage camp participants in interactive activities including organized arts and crafts, singing, sports activities, games and field trips, while maintaining a safe environment.

 

Work Performed:

  • Work with Camp Leaders/Supervisors and Recreation Services Coordinator to maintain a welcoming, and inclusive environment where everyone is respected including staff/participants/caregivers.
  • Work with Resource Consultant, Program Staff and Supervisor of Recreation to develop strategies to help the child(ren) be successful and engaged in the program.
  • Ensure the child is released to properly authorized persons.
  • Ensure the daily inclusion of active play and be an active participant with the child(ren), as appropriate.
  • Providing support to child/ren who could be experiencing difficulty participating in program.
  • Demonstrate courtesy and professionalism when interacting with others and follows professional standards of confidentiality at all times. 
  • Provide a safe, healthy environment for the child through responsible supervision and decision making based upon knowledge of child’s needs, emergency procedures, hygiene and the safe use of equipment and materials.
  • Continually assess the program, resolve problems, and engage in planning for the individual program accommodation/inclusion, along with the Camp Supervisors, Recreation Services Coordinator and/or Supervisor of Recreation.
  • Documents and reports suspected child abuse to the Children’s Aid Society. Informs the Manager. Understand personal and legal liability for reporting procedures. 
  • Communicate daily with parents in an open supportive manner. Respond to parents’ requests, suggestions, inquiries, and concerns on a daily basis, referring to the Camp Supervisors, Recreation Coordinator or Supervisor of Recreation when appropriate.
  • Participate in on-sight meeting when required, with the Resource Consultant, Camp Supervisors, Recreation Services Coordinator, or Supervisor of Recreation to help child/ren being supported to be successful in program.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Completed Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent.
  • Enrolled in 2-year College diploma program with focus in Recreation or on child development or a Social Services degree or related field is preferred.
  • Experience supporting children with disabilities in a recreational setting.

Specialized Skills, Abilities, Training, License, Memberships, or Certifications

  • Previous leadership and teaching experience is an asset, as is previous camp experience.
  • Current First Aid/CPR Certificate.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, Behaviour Management Systems, Mental Health First Aid, and / or Crisis Intervention Training certification is considered an asset.
