Duties:

This position reports to the Supervisor of Facility Maintenance. The Facility Plumber is responsible for repairs, preventative maintenance, and restoration work related to plumbing systems, devices, and fixtures.  Troubleshoots and assesses equipment and facility material needs.  Determines and procures parts and materials needed directly from the vendor, in accordance with City purchasing by-laws and procedures.

 

Work Performed:

·       Performs plumbing work on building operating systems, including equipment, devices, and fixtures.

·       Repairs and replaces plumbing system components and fixtures; installs new water and sanitation systems in facilities or adds onto existing systems in accordance with the Fire, Gas, Electrical, and Building Codes, Ontario Regulation 170/03 (Drinking Water Systems), and related municipal by-laws.

·       Provides relative trade expertise; offers remedies and/or alternatives based on experience, trade practices, with utility (water) conservation a top priority, in accordance with Ontario Fire, Electrical, and Building codes.

·       Cooperates with the building clients and staff in other City facilities to perform and accomplish repair duties, scheduling work to minimize impact on activities or programs while maintaining a high level of public safety.  Liaise with clients in the facilities and work in an organized, safe manner, keeping the occupants and the public in mind always.

·       Organizes and sets up work site; schedules the use of special equipment and material needed; and organizes site clean-up.

·       Reports any conditions to the Supervisor that should be investigated or corrected because of work carried out or observations made; prepares reports as required; tracks expenses to associated work orders and completes paperwork.

·       Participates in the development and implementation of a comprehensive plumbing preventative maintenance program which includes all plumbing systems, fixtures, valves and shut-offs, hot water and storage tanks, cushion tanks, water softeners and systems, sump pump systems, back flow prevention devices, hot water heating systems, swimming pool pumps, irrigation systems, and water sanitation systems.

·       Ensures all City equipment, resources, vehicles, cell phone, and tools used are maintained in good and safe working conditions.  Reports need to repair or replace City city-owned tools and equipment to the Supervisor.  Recommends need to acquire specialized tools or equipment to Supervisor.

·       Participates in the testing and maintenance of small drinking water systems, in accordance with Ontario Regulation 170/03.

·       Participates in a comprehensive Backflow Prevention Maintenance program in accordance with municipal backflow prevention by-laws, which includes the surveying and documentation of all new and existing backflow prevention devices in City facilities.  Performs annual testing of all backflow devices as directed by governing by-laws.

·       Assesses and repairs heating units, gas piping, chlorine piping, and air lines based on knowledge of gas code, plumbing code, and building codes.

·       Maintains appropriate service and repair records, including completion of work orders.

·       Follows lockout/tagout procedures to prevent accidental or unauthorized access to energized power sources that are undergoing maintenance or other work.

·       Perform other related duties as assigned. 

Qualifications:

·       Province of Ontario Certificate of Qualification (The Apprenticeship and Tradesmen’s Qualification Act).  306A Red Seal Plumbing Certificate of Qualification.   

·       Hold good standing with Skilled Trades Ontario.

·       Must have a valid and current Cross Connection Backflow Prevention Certificate

·       Valid Driver’s License (Class G).

 

Specialized Skills, Abilities, Training, License, Memberships, or Certifications

·       Gas Fitter 2 License is an asset.

·       Knowledge of various plumbing systems; use and maintenance of trade specific materials, tools, instrumentation, and equipment; applicable building and safety code requirements; methods and practices followed in the maintenance of tools, machinery, and equipment; safety precautions to be observed in the maintenance and installation of plumbing systems, devices, and fixtures.

·       Working knowledge and understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the regulations that apply to this work.  Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with plumbing and gas work.

·       Knowledge of the Ontario Fire, Ontario Electrical Code, Gas, and Building codes related to plumbing systems.

·       Ability to use a computerized work management system.

·       Reads and interprets schematics, and plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and architectural plans, drawings, and blueprints, with the ability to update drawings as required. 

·       Availability for on-call duty, standby, and emergency calls.
